The short answer
ExpertFlow serves Highlands, CA, an unincorporated hillside community in San Mateo County. We focus on dependable heating, heat pump and mini-split upgrades, and AC service for the hot days that still reach the Peninsula.
Highlands is an unincorporated community in San Mateo County, about 18 miles northwest of our Los Altos base, set on the hillsides of the Peninsula. Homes up here tend to deal with more fog, wind and cool evenings than houses down in the flatter parts of the valley, so heating is usually the system that works hardest. ExpertFlow HVAC Repair Service provides furnace and heating repair, heat pump and ductless installs, air conditioning service for the warm spells, plus maintenance, duct cleaning and indoor air quality help for Highlands households.
Hillside weather is mostly a heating story
The Peninsula hills sit closer to the ocean's influence than the inner Santa Clara Valley, and that shows in daily life: grey mornings, breezy afternoons and nights that cool off quickly. Furnaces and heat pumps in this kind of setting often run in spring and fall as well as winter, so their annual run time can be higher than many people assume for the Bay Area.
That extra use wears on blower motors, igniters and filters. A furnace that heats a drafty hillside home through long, cool shoulder seasons needs regular attention to stay efficient, and a heat pump needs its outdoor coil kept clear and its defrost cycle working correctly on damp, chilly nights.
Air conditioning still matters on the hot days
Even fog-prone neighborhoods get a handful of hot spells each year, usually when the marine layer burns off and inland heat pushes toward the coast. Many hillside homes were built without central air, and owners often find that a few warm days are enough to make upper floors uncomfortable.
For those houses, a ductless mini-split is frequently the cleanest answer. One outdoor unit can feed indoor heads in the bedrooms or the sunniest living space, and because a mini-split is a heat pump, it also heats efficiently the rest of the year. For homes that already have ducts in good shape, adding a central AC or swapping the furnace for a ducted heat pump can cover both seasons with one system.
What we fix and install in Highlands
Our Highlands work covers the full list below. If you are not sure which service fits, describe what the system is doing and we will sort it out on the first call.
- Heating and furnace repair for gas furnaces, wall heaters and heat pumps
- AC repair for central systems and ductless units
- Heat pump installation, ducted or ductless
- Furnace installation and replacement
- Air conditioner installation for homes adding cooling
- Seasonal HVAC maintenance visits
- Duct cleaning and indoor air quality improvements
Replacing older gas equipment
Many Highlands homes still run on gas furnaces, some of them well past their expected life. If yours is still working, there is no rule forcing you to remove it. The Bay Area Air District appliance rules apply only when a furnace or water heater fails or is replaced. Looking further out, Rule 9-4 requires natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 to meet a zero-NOx emission standard, which in practice points toward a heat pump at that replacement.
Planning ahead lets you compare options calmly. We look at your panel capacity, duct condition and the rooms that are hardest to heat, then lay out what a heat pump would involve. For incentives, check BayREN and your local clean energy provider; offers change by funding cycle and we confirm the current one before quoting it. The federal 25C credit is no longer available for new heat pump installations, since it covered systems placed in service before December 31, 2025.
Damp air, dust and your ducts
Cool, moist air and older homes can be a tough combination for indoor comfort. Ducts running through crawlspaces or attics may have loose joints that draw in dusty or musty air. During a duct cleaning we clear debris and check for those gaps, and during an indoor air quality visit we look at filtration and ventilation to help the house feel fresher without overloading the blower.
A yearly maintenance visit ties all of this together: we test safety controls, clean what needs cleaning, check airflow and let you know about any part that looks close to failing before the next cold snap.
