The short answer
ExpertFlow HVAC Repair Service provides AC repair, heating and furnace repair, heat pump and AC installation, ductless mini-splits, maintenance, duct cleaning and indoor air quality service in Monte Sereno. We drive about ten miles southeast from Los Altos and also serve Saratoga, Campbell and Cupertino.
Monte Sereno is a small residential city in the southwest corner of Santa Clara County, roughly ten miles southeast of our shop in Los Altos. Homes here tend to sit on larger lots against the foothills, with long driveways, mature trees and floor plans that have grown over time through additions and remodels. That combination creates its own HVAC puzzles: a furnace sized for the original house now serving twice the square footage, ducts stretched to reach a new wing, or a guest room that never warms up. ExpertFlow HVAC Repair Service helps Monte Sereno owners sort out those situations with careful diagnosis, honest repair advice and properly planned installations.
Foothill homes and the southern valley climate
The Santa Clara Valley follows a Mediterranean rhythm of dry summers and mild, damp winters, but not every part of it feels the same. The southern reaches of the valley run noticeably hotter in summer than the neighborhoods closer to the Bay, and Monte Sereno sits on that warmer side. Big rooms with tall ceilings and west-facing glass can take a real load off an air conditioner, especially late in the afternoon.
Winter nights at the base of the hills can feel chilly and damp, so heating equipment gets steady use for months. Long duct runs to far bedrooms lose heat along the way, and older systems that were never rebalanced after a remodel often leave one end of the house comfortable and the other end cold.
Problems we are often asked to solve
Most calls from Monte Sereno fall into a few patterns. Knowing which one you are dealing with helps us bring the right tools and parts.
- Cooling that keeps up in the morning but falls behind on hot afternoons, usually a sign of airflow, refrigerant or sizing issues
- A furnace that short-cycles, smells of dust or shuts off before the far rooms warm up
- Rooms added in a remodel that sit on the end of a long, undersized duct branch
- Two separate systems for upstairs and downstairs where one has quietly stopped working right
- Debris from surrounding trees clogging outdoor coils and blocking airflow
- Interest in replacing an aging gas furnace with a heat pump before it fails
Repair first, replacement when it is justified
When something breaks, our technician works through the system step by step: controls, electrical components, combustion or refrigerant readings, and airflow. We explain the cause and give you the options, including when a repair is a reasonable bridge and when putting money into an old unit no longer makes sense.
For larger homes, replacement is a chance to correct the original design. That may mean a properly sized furnace or heat pump, a ductless mini-split for a wing the main ducts never served well, or zoning so different parts of the house can be set to different temperatures. We look at the electrical panel and the duct layout before recommending anything, so there are no surprises on installation day.
What the Air District rules mean for you
There is no requirement to tear out a working gas furnace. The Bay Area Air District appliance rules apply only when an existing furnace or water heater fails or is replaced. Under Rule 9-4, natural gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 must meet a zero-NOx standard, and in practice that points future replacements toward heat pumps.
If you are also thinking about a water heater, keep in mind that the zero-NOx date for small water heaters under Rule 9-6 was set for 2027, and the Air District Board is considering amendments in November 2026 that could delay it. It is worth checking the current rule before you plan that project. For incentives, BayREN and your clean energy provider list current heat pump offers, which change by funding cycle; we confirm before quoting. The federal 25C credit no longer covers heat pumps installed after 2025.
Keeping things running between visits
Annual maintenance matters more on homes with long duct runs and heavy tree cover. We clean coils, test safety controls, check drain lines, inspect accessible ductwork and replace filters. Duct cleaning and sealing, along with indoor air quality upgrades, are available for owners concerned about dust, pollen or smoke drifting in during dry months. Our route through Monte Sereno also passes through Saratoga, Campbell, Cupertino, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale.
